J. Harris (b. 1998, Redondo Beach, California) lives and works in Los Angeles. With a background in product design, he holds a degree in Transportation Design from ArtCenter College of Design. During his studies, he apprenticed at the studio of Shelby and Sandy in Downtown Los Angeles, laying a solid foundation in traditional studio practices. J. Harris's artistic practice investigates material, memory, and participation through leather and reclaimed textiles.
He approaches art via tactile engagement and an exploration of the inherent qualities of found materials. For the past five years, he has focused on creating works from overlooked or discarded leather and fabric. While the overall composition of each work is predetermined, the natural variations in color, grain, and texture of the available materials often reshape the original vision, making the work a two-way dialogue between the creator and the material.
Participation is central to his practice. Many works are movable or modular, inviting viewers to rearrange elements and engage physically with the material surface. Conceptually, he draws from the reductive visual language of childhood imagery, using minimal shapes to encourage open interpretation. By combining reclaimed materials, tactile interaction, and reduced forms, J. Harris produces works that exist at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and design, foregrounding the viewer's role in completing the meaning of the work.
